What is Employability?
The MMU definition of employability is:
“the development of skills, abilities and personal attributes that enhance students’ capability to secure rewarding and satisfying outcomes in their economic, social and community lives”.
Graduates need a variety of higher level skills and experience to maximise their potential whatever they choose to do. They also need to meet the expectations of employers. Mentoring offers the opportunity for mentees to grasp the realities of life beyond graduation in a supportive relationship and mentors to share their experience in a constructive and encouraging exchange.

What is Mentoring?
Mentor: “Experienced and trusted adviser” (Oxford English Dictionary)
Mentoring is a relationship in which one person helps another to discover more about themselves, their potential and their capability. It is especially useful at times of transition and should produce a positive effect on the personal and professional development of the mentee.
As a mentee, you would need to:
- Take responsibility for your own development, think about what you wish to achieve, and what tasks need to be undertaken
- Communicate as clearly as possible with your mentor. Let them know what help and support you are looking for as specifically as possible
- Reflect on what they have said, evaluate how things are going, and what the next steps might be
- Take action where it is required, and let your mentor know what you are doing
The mentor's role is to
- Listen, ask questions, and act as a source of information, experience, contacts and opportunities
- Offer different perspectives to challenge your thinking
- Provide support and encouragement
